The Argentinean Embassy - 18th February 2008
Tango Nirvana were delighted to be asked along
with other Tango promotors in the country to a Tango evening
at the Embassy on the 18th February.
We all arrived at 5pm and were treated to two
talks by distinguished members of the Tango Community. The first
was by Christine Denniston, a renowned dancer and scholar who
has immersed herself in the Tango world for many years. She gave
a talk about key Argentine Tango music recordings of the 20th
century. She had many examples of old
recordings
which
she played to put across her points. It was an interesting talk
and gave a real insight into how the music developed and what
people mean when they talk of 'the Golden Age'.
The second talk was given by one of the world's
most distinguished choreographers and dancers - Miguel Angel
Zotto who, with his Dance Company, Tango X 2, is just finishing
their latest run at the Peacock Theatre in London.
He talked about 'the Greatest Dancers Ever',
accompanied by some marvellous old photos and film footage which
clearly showed
the progression of the dance and which was fascinating to see.
After the talks and some refreshments we were
treated to a short performance by some of Miguels dancers in one
of the beautiful
old rooms at the Embassy. The evening of course dissolved into
a dance for everyone, which was lovely especially with the beautiful
surroundings.
One of the reasons for the evening was to promote
a new book about Tango by Christine Denniston called 'The Meaning
of Tango'. I would highly recommend it as it is clearly written
and full of
interesting
facts
about Tango,
it's origins and development. If you are interested
in buying a copy, (it costs £9.99), we are shortly going
to be receiving a small quantity. Please let me know and
I will reserve a copy for you! |
